<image:title>Blog - Condylar Resorption, Posture, and Your Airway - As condyles breakdown and lose height during the CR disease process, the lower jaw finds itself rotated further and further back into the airway. The only way to compensate for this infringement on airway space is to either A) consciously jut one’s lower jaw forward or B) subconsciously maintain forward head posture.</image:title>
<image:caption>Doing either of these chronically can result in the development of chronic pain (head, neck, and jaw pain, spinal issues, etc.) and spinal issues, and many CR patients find themselves doing some combination of both. When sleeping, these airway-protecting behaviors cannot easily be engaged and CR patients often snore and experience sleep apnea.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62678c0db9ef2f2b43ce6837/31b7937e-d2da-43e1-bc78-a124a479cbfb/pre-op+posture+only.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Condylar Resorption, Posture, and Your Airway - In the image to the right, the devastating impact of trying to maintain correct posture with CR can be appreciated. In the left forward head posture example, the neck is craned into a more forward position, allowing for the airway to be more open, but at the cost of spinal health (CR patients commonly develop military neck/cervical kyphosis) and muscular health (head/neck/jaw tension).</image:title>
<image:caption>In the right correct posture example, the lower jaw is pressed against the soft tissues of the throat in a way that greatly limits airway space. This position is simply not sustainable for long periods of time, and any situations that result in the lower jaw being pressed against the throat (for example, needing to open your mouth at a dentist’s office) can cause great discomfort and anxiety.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Patient Spotlight: Tara B. - In the following years, I sought help from various dentists/TMJ specialists, who mostly told me to eat softer foods and recommended a night guard.</image:title>
<image:caption>Nothing helped much, so I just began to accept that this was something I would be dealing with in my life. After all, I knew a lot of other people with TMJ pain around my age. While I tried not to let the pain and functional issues get to me too much in my 20s and early 30s, it was mentally challenging to deal with my facial changes, and the way other people interacted with me due to them.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Patient Spotlight: Tara B. - It’s hard to remember a time when condylar resorption wasn’t a part of my life.</image:title>
<image:caption>As a young child, I did not experience any jaw or bite issues. I’ve spent way too much time looking back on pictures from those early years, trying to piece together when this all started. When I was 7 years old, in October of 1991, I had an accident during recess at school. I loved my gymnastics classes and wanted to show off a trick to my friends on the monkey bars. The next thing I remember, I landed on my face, and I was skirted off to emergency oral surgery. Given that it was over 30 years ago, I don’t have any records from that procedure, and don’t know what happened during it other than the extraction of a couple damaged baby teeth.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us - Juanita Butler</image:title>
<image:caption>Juanita discovered she had idiopathic condylar resorption in 2018, having spent years searching for a diagnosis for an open bite that progressively widened after orthodontics. Meeting other patients in online support groups showed what a common experience this was and helped guide her through TMJ replacement and upper jaw surgery in 2019. She brings this personal experience, and her background in organized labor, to her passion for patient advocacy and insurance reform. <image:title>About Us - Caitlin Brown</image:title>
<image:caption>Caitlin was diagnosed with idiopathic condylar resorption during her freshman year in college, after just a year of severe TMJ pain and symptoms. She had bilateral total joint replacements, coronoidectomies, genioplasty and more done in 2017, at age 21. She then went on to have a second successful bilateral TMJ replacement in 2019 after developing a severe cobalt allergy to the replacements. Throughout her experience she has continuously noticed a huge need for support in the condylar resorption and TMJ surgery community. She is currently a Registered Dental Assistant Student (RDA-S) with plans to pursue a surgical assistant career in OMFS. With her personal and medical field experience she brings her passion for patient care and education, along with advocacy for condylar resorption education and research. <image:title>About Us - Micaela Montgomery, PhD ▶CEO & Co-Founder</image:title>
<image:caption>Micaela was diagnosed with condylar resorption in 2018 after nearly 2 decades of a severely recessed lower jaw. She became increasingly involved in online communities relating to jaw surgery and condylar resorption after her diagnosis and, following her TMJ replacement and upper jaw surgery in 2019, she felt there was a significant need to improve support for those dealing with condylar resorption. After receiving her PhD in Microbiology and Immunology in 2021, she’s currently working as a scientific research editor and has also decided to focus her attention towards supporting condylar resorption patients and the physicians that treat them. Her interests are developing educational materials and expanding research relating to condylar resorption disease mechanisms.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Progressive resorption of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) condyles results in recession of the lower jaw and formation of an overbite/open bite.
